Seeking more tranquillity in their retirement, Maria do los Angeles and her husband purchased the super small, 0.5 hectare farm 12 years ago, thereafter renovating the coffee plants with better quality trees. Since then, all of the family-husband, three children and grandson, all help out in the farm’s coffee production.
Cherries are picked ripe and depulped in water, then sorted for density and size. The coffee is then fermented 20 hours without water and dried on the patio for 8 days. Like other super small farms, the coffee is manually picked for quality after drying.
In 2019, peter surveyed the Nariño department as part of Alchemy’s 2019 Colombia origin trip. In addition to visiting our core producers, Peter also found a handful of like-minded producers, all of which are looking to improve their processes and hence, quality. Nariño is a department at the southern edge of Colombia, bordering Ecuador. Rich in volcanic soil and blessed with high altitude and sunshine, the area is primed for coffee agriculture. However, the department is also one of the poorest and least productive in Colombia. Producers must learn how to cultivate specialty coffee and develop themselves to take advantage of the land they have.
